Meet Mike
Hello, and welcome! I am a licensed clinical mental health counselor with over 15 years of experience helping folks work towards improved mental health.
My career began in 2010 as a field instructor for a wilderness therapy program in Utah. While there, I learned first-hand how the right kind of assessment, support, and connection can lead to incredible experiences of self-discovery and change.
In 2014, I arrived in Vermont and since then, I have helped people in a variety of clinical settings across the state understand more about how their experiences – and beliefs about those experiences – have shaped who they are today.
I strive to be inclusive, collaborative, and open with all of my clients, believing that the therapeutic relationship is paramount to all other aspects of the work. You are the expert on your life. My job is to help you frame your experiences in such a context while also identifying new ways of approaching challenges. We will work together to unearth core beliefs about yourself and bring awareness to how those influence your daily interactions and behaviors.
My clinical approach utilizes:
Psychodynamic concepts and Attachment Theory to better understand how early childhood experiences inform who you are, your relationships, and how you experience the world
ACT (acceptance & commitment therapy) to help align behaviors with goals and values
DBT (dialectical behavior therapy) to build skills in interpersonal effectiveness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and mindfulness
EMDR (eye-movement desensitization and reprocessing) to support healing the impacts of trauma
I am regularly working to understand how my privilege as a cis white queer male intersects with other experiences of identity in our society. This means I am constantly being made aware of blind spots and exploring areas for growth. My hope is to create an environment where clients feel brave and as safe as possible to be their authentic selves without risk of discrimination or prejudice.
When not in the office, you’ll find me adventuring outside. I love a long hike, bike ride, or paddle, hammocking by the lake with a good book, or enjoying a ski run on some fresh snow. At home, find me trying out new recipes in the kitchen, planting flowers in my garden, building Legos or making art.
This is Kuna, my 13-year old yellow lab. She’s the queen of the office and joins me most days. She’s calm, gentle, and a sweet little goofball. If you let her, she will most likely find a spot next to you on the couch for a snuggly snooze.
